What’s stopping community pharmacy from finally moving from a prescription-based model to one that is patient-based? South of the border, the National Community Pharmacy Association has determined that the only way to expedite meaningful change in the way community pharmacy operates, is viewed and is valued is by facilitating rapid, large-scale change. Pharmacy doesn’t lack innovation, the group reasons, it lacks scaled innovation. That’s the premise behind the Flip the Pharmacy movement, a national initiative with the goal of transforming community pharmacy model from a prescription-based to a patient- based model. 

Almost 1,000 pharmacies in 40+ states are in the process of flipping their model via a 24-month guided program that supports independent pharmacies by providing SMART methodologies across six different domains: leveraging the appointment-based model, improving patient follow-up and monitoring, developing new roles for non-pharmacist staff, optimizing the use of technology, establishing relationships with other care providers and developing the business model and expressing value. 
It’s a scalable, easily-duplicated initiative that’s finally transforming community pharmacy in meaningful and significant ways.
