Josh Sigel is an internationally-recognized thought leader and innovator in the food technology, retail food, and consumer products distribution industries. With over 15 years of senior level technology and operations leadership experience, Josh has worked with some of the nation’s largest retailers and distributors leading transformational technology initiatives.
Josh is currently the Chief Operating Officer of Innit, an “Eating Technology” company where he leads the company developing the world’s first platform for the connected kitchen. A leading authority on food omni-commerce, he is passionate about the future of the connected kitchen and believes continued innovation in this space will help people eat and live better. Sigel also serves as an advisor and investor in a number of food technology start-ups.
Prior to Innit, Josh managed his own consulting firm, J. Sigel Ventures LLC, leveraging his expertise in enhancing the customer experience while driving top-line sales and bottom-line savings. Previous to this, Josh was Chief Information Officer of Natural Markets Food Group (“NMFG”), an operator of retail food and food service stores throughout North America. In this capacity, he oversaw all areas of technology and digital marketing across over 40 retail and restaurant locations. At NMFG, Josh also led the development of one of the most advanced mobile payment, loyalty, in-store kiosk and online ordering systems in retail food and food service.
Prior to joining NMFG, Josh was the National Vice President of Digital Media at United Natural Foods [NASDAQ: UNFI], the largest organic and natural food distributor in North America, with total annual revenues of more than $6.5 billion. During Josh’s time at the company as the National Vice President of IT Operations & Innovation, sales increased by more than 50% from $3.4 billion in 2008 to over $5.3 billion in sales in 2012. Josh and his team played an instrumental role with the build out and transformation of UNFI’s technology infrastructure. During his tenure in this role Josh was responsible for UNFI’s IT infrastructure, Client Services, IT Security, Unified Communications, Enterprise Output and Applied Technologies. Additionally, Josh directed technology functions for UNFI’s distribution, retail, manufacturing, and brand divisions including UNFI Canada, Albert’s Organics, Earth Origins Market, Woodstock Farms Manufacturing, Select Nutrition and Blue Marble Brands. In 2012, driven by the rapid growth of social/digital media and the proliferation of web and mobile technologies, Josh recognized the changing role of senior technology leaders and the convergence of marketing and technology within the enterprise and became the National Vice President of Digital Media for UNFI. Josh and his team pioneered the development and design of iUNFI, a state-of-the-art mobile retail replenishment and customer technology application. iUNFI’s Mobile Solutions was the first iOS/iPhone application to be used in the wholesale food distribution industry and is the most advanced of its kind processing over $1 billion a year in sales transactions for UNFI.
Previous to UNFI, Josh was Chief Information Officer of Millbrook Distribution Services, one of the nations largest value added distributors of specialty, natural, and ethnic foods, as well as health and beauty care and general merchandise products. Millbrook supplied over 10,000 retail outlets throughout the United States with more than 40,000 items. During his role as CIO, Josh was one of the first in the industry to develop a mobile sales force automation and field service technology platform. In 2008 Millbrook was acquired by UNFI where as a member of the senior executive team Josh was instrumental in the integration of both companies. He remained with UNFI as a senior technology executive.
Josh began his career in 2002 at Deloitte Consulting where he became an expert in business process improvement and helped Fortune 500 companies achieve operational excellence. Josh graduated with honors from Emory University Goizetta School of Business with a Bachelors in Business Administration majoring in Decision and Information Analysis, Consulting and Venture Management.
Josh has been a featured speaker at the National Retail Federation’s Annual Convention and Expo, ThoughtWorks Live Europe, The Online Retailer Conference & eCommerce Expo in Australia, The Shanghai Franchise Retail Industry Summit and Asia Retail Innovation Summit in China, and ParadigmShift in the US.
