Canadians deserve equitable and affordable access to medications. So, national pharmacare sounds like a panacea, right? Well, not so fast. National pharmacare is nuanced, and the devil is in the details. What’s covered, who pays, and who administers the program all have significant implications on patients and pharmacies. The federal Liberal government has agreed to work with the NDP to introduce a Canada Pharmacare Act by the end of 2023, but how pharmacare will be achieved has yet to be defined. Despite tremendous strides in increased scope and service remuneration, a single payor pharmacare model could result in a $1 Billion annual loss in dispensing service funding for pharmacies. In this session, we’ll discuss the current policy landscape impacting pharmacare, the implications of different models on pharmacy business and practice, and how you can be part of a solution that ensures the sustainability of the critical pharmacy services upon which Canadians rely!
